Hm, you are describing the kind of anxiety that is about having anxious thoughts. Mine is not like that but a physical illness, sinking stomach, shaking hands etc. it's not a voice.

Yes, but there are many kinds of anxiety. I definitely feel what you're describing as well.

I very definitely have anxiety similar to the type you described.

But what seems to be a much worse problem for me is that I also have very extreme social anxiety which makes it very hard to be around people.

And, no, I did not know it when I had it.

I did not even begin to understand that my social anxiety WAS social anxiety until well after I had been diagnosed with autism eight years ago, at the age of 55.

The neuropsychologist, who had tested me for autism, even asked me if I had problems with anxiety.

I said no.

That’s how clueless I was about what I was experiencing.

Bob, it is like playing hit or miss with the doctors or living daily. You know it's there, and something is happening, but it's something that others around you misread, and you have a hard time describing if asked; only you know exactly what you're feeling. I get it. Thank you for adding to the discussion. I appreciate it.

You may be surprised to hear that I didn’t ever know exactly what I was feeling.

I only ever had a vague understanding that something was very wrong.

The reason for this is that I have alexithymia.

Some people seem to defined it as if it is a problem with vocabulary; not knowing what to call something.

But my understanding of my alexithymia is that it prevents me from understanding what I’m feeling.

So that adds a whole new layer of difficulty onto the process of understanding everything else.

this was hilarious - I laughed through the whole thing. I may or may not have an anxious imaginary roommate named Kevin... :)

Kate, thank you! I don't know. Kevin just felt right. I think he also eats ice pretty loud.
